Police received a call of a woman selling magazines in the area of Dupont Circle. According to the caller, the woman was making roundabout references to prostitution as well. When police found the woman, she claimed she works for World Wide Reader selling magazines door to door. When police asked her if she made references to prostitution, she allegedly replied, “Hell no. I am trying to sell magazines.” Police brought the woman to Kentucky Fried Chicken to be picked up by her employer.

Two Arrested in Fight Over Microwaving Food

Eugene John Shea Jr., 60, and Joanne Knapp, 49, of 86 Asqah Drive in North Kingstown were arrested Sept. 18 following an alleged disturbance.

Police arrived at Shea’s house after a family member, Joanne Knapp, claimed he tried to choke her before he grabbed his “pot plants” from the garden and fled. According to the woman’s initial statement, the two began arguing when Shea asked her to put a cover over her coffee before she heated it up in the microwave. Shea allegedly threw a piece of Saran Wrap at the woman before choking her “as hard as he could,” the victim alleged. (Police noted that the woman had no signs of redness or bruising on her neck consistent with being strangled.)

Later, she changed her story, saying that Shea handed her the Saran Wrap before calling her “crazy” as he left the room. The woman then said she followed Shea to confront him, at which time he allegedly charged her and attempted to strangle her.

While checking identifications, police found that Knapp had two active warrants and placed her under arrest. At headquarters, Knapp requested medical attention, citing that she thought her throat had been crushed. Once rescue crews arrived, however, Knapp refused treatment and said there was nothing they could do for her.

Later that day, Shea turned himself in and allegedly admitted that the marijuana found at the residence was his. According to his side of the story, Knapp tried to “bait” him into hitting her and then screamed “assault” when he put his hands on her shoulders to get her to back off. Shea also alleges that Knapp put her hands upside down around her neck in an attempt to make marks before calling police. When asked why he ran from police, Shea explained he was scared because on TV if the person who calls the police has marks on them, the other person gets arrested.
