UPDATED: Multiple Roads Closed Due to Downed Trees

Fallen trees have closed several roads in North Kingstown.

Update, Monday 5:30 p.m. – The North Kingstown Police Department has shut down West Main Street from Wickford Package Store to Brown Street due to flooding.

Original posting –  Monday afternoon's heavy winds are wreaking havoc on trees and power lines in North Kingstown. According to NK Public Works Director Phil Bergeron, six roads were closed Monday afternoon due to fallen trees and power lines.

Bergeron said that at least a portion of each of the follow roads is closed off –

  • Harrison Road
  • Austin Road
  • Flechter Road
  • Lafayette Road
  • Congdon Hill Road
  • Shermantown Road (near Slocum)

"About two hours ago the winds started to pick up and we receive a lot of calls about downed trees," said Bergeron.

He added the calls have been coming in on a regular basis. National Grid has been responded to calls of trees that have also taken down power lines.

Bergeron said that the Department of Public Works will be keeping an eye on Wickford Village as high tide looks to return around 8 p.m. tonight. Coupled with the storm surge, the high tide poses the potential for flooding in the village.
