Spirit Day 2012’s “We Are Proud of You” Award Contest – to be held March 24, 2012 at the North Kingstown High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – will celebrate charitable endeavors by individuals and groups.

During a planning committee meeting for Spirit Day, 2011, Deb Gardiner – a member of the committee – mentioned that she had started a group called “Little Dresses for Africa” and wondered if any of us might be interested. The Spirit Day Committee was very interested and Deb was convinced to have a display of the dresses, made by her group and destined for underprivileged girls in Africa at Spirit Day. (The program has been so popular, the group now makes shorts for underprivileged boys as well.) Her work was also featured on the cover of "The View" prior to the Spirit Day 2011 event.

Deb’s exhibit at Spirit Day was a hit with attendees, many of whom offered their help, and led the Spirit Day Committee to consider celebrating others like Deb who selflessly devote their time and effort to helping others. 

If you know an individual or a member of a group that is dedicated to helping others who are less fortunate (including animals) and would like to nominate them for Spirit Day’s “The We Are Proud of You Award,” please call Harriet Powell at 294-4737 or email her at harriet.powell1@verizon.net. 

Individuals and groups may also nominate themselves. Nominees must have a presence in North Kingstown although the charitable endeavors may target any needy group anywhere in the world. 501(c)3’s, businesses and small and large civic or social groups are welcome. We would prefer groups that are self-funded and not well known to let more folks know of their work, but this is not a prerequisite; all charitable groups are urged to participate if they wish.

Attendees of Spirit Day 2012 will be asked to vote for the charitable endeavor that they deem most impressive. Usually the top three vote getters are recognized. The winner will receive a citation at a meeting of the North Kingstown Town Council later in the year.
