North Kingstown's John Henseler passed away last week on June 28 at the age of 71. Both Henseler and his late wife Suzanne were best known for their involvement and work in the North Kingstown community. His wife's community involvement (ranging from her work as Majority Whip in the General Assembly to a member of the North Kingstown Town Council and teaching) was recognized in 2008 when the council renamed Quidnessett Elementary School in her honor. She died in 2006 after a battle with breast cancer.
Henseler also gave back to his community, and his country – proudly serving in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and rising to the rank of lieutenant. He was a senior quality assurance computer analyst for CVS for 18 years before retiring.
Henseler was renowned for his involvement in youth sports. He was the former president of both the North Kingstown Babe Ruth League and the North Kingstown Soccer Association. He was also a former coach of the NK Little League and St. Francis de Sales CYO Basketball, where he was also an active communicant. For 30 years, he was the scorekeeper at Bishop Hendricken High School's basketball games.
He leaves behind three sons – Sean P. Henseler of Warwick, Warren P. Henseler of Coventry and Timothy B. Henseler of Maryland. He also leaves behind three brothers (Richard C. Henseler, Rev. James Thomas Henseler and Alexander J. Henseler, Jr.), four sisters (Victoria Kuntzman, Mary E. Murray, Patricia A. Florey and Alice Henseler) and 10 grandchildren (Ryan, Kylea, MEghan, Tyler, Kyle, Luke, Aidan, Trevin, Noah and Emily).
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church. A burial with military honors will be held at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Visiting hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home.
