How Would You Grade NK's Plowing?

Some roads are cleared while others are a bit gnarly. How do you think NK's plows did during the storm?

Now that the snow has fallen, and started to melt, it’s your time to rate how the North Kingstown's plows handled the 2 feet-plus of snow that fell Friday and Saturday.

Feel free to give praise or thanks, express frustrations or offer up constructive criticism in the comments below, and keep in mind, the blizzard was the fifth largest snowstorm in New England history.

What areas still need some TLC? What areas were cleared quickly and well?

Hat's off to these hard workers. I feel they did their best to stay ahead of the storm and continue to keep our streets cleared. It's no easy job. We owe them our gratitude.

I agree with Frank. It was a nasty storm and they did a great job getting at least one lane cleared on the side streets for emergency and electrical workers to pass through.

I know the workers are hard at it, but our street hasn't been plowed since the snow began on Friday. If it wasn't for a neighbor with a lawn tractor & plow, nobody would be able to get out of the road. A plow did come by last night (Monday) and actually took snow from the main road and tossed it into the intersection where it froze like a one foot tall curb blocking the road again. Even the road outside of the neighborhood is just a single narrow lane.

I suspect the town needs additional resources to do an adequate job, and what has been done so far is not adequate.

MIke, where are you? I wonder if they missed you. That happened to my cul de sac a couple of years ago and I had to call the town to get the guys to come back.

We should be proud of our NK public workers as all considered, initially and ongoing they did a great job us.
I was briefly behind one of our snow plows cleaning up a side street last night. Apparently as the driver proceeded he was slightly lifting his plow blade in front of driveways to avoid piling up snow in front of resident driveways. Thanks!

With the resources and equipment available, I think they did a good job. I think WE need to do more as citizens to help (unless we want to invest more in equipment and manpower-and we don't). Every community is strapped for cash and requires our willingness to help out in extraordinary times. Clearing storm drains, fire hydrants, and clearing a path for the elderly or the infirmed not only makes us good citizens and neighbors, but makes us feel good about ourselves too!

Agreed. No point maintaining and paying every year for the resources for a storm that comes around every five years. Just need people to have a little patience--and help each other. The town did a good job...

After a snowstorm a couple of weeks ago, I thought the plowing was lackluster, so I was concerned about how the town would do in a true crisis. But by Saturday morning the streets in our neighborhood (near Quonset) were adequately plowed, considering everything. I stayed off the streets that day, but by Sunday I was on Post Road and 1A South. Post Road was only 1 1/2 lanes southbound, but well plowed. 1A South was really sloppy past the high school. So was Camp Ave. Nevertheless, they were ok to drive on carefully. By this morning, Post Road was back to four lanes and some extra plowing and the rain seemed to have taken care of Camp Avenue. When I listen to the folks in Providence and North Providence and think about this town being 47 square miles, I think we did OK. I'm kind of wondering whether those towns in the urban core even had a plan!

If I am not mistaken 1A south and Post Rd are the responsibility of the State not the town

I think the NK guys did a great job. What I'd like to see is a by-law to prevent people clearing their drives out onto the road. What I'm referring to is folks who use either a snowblower to blow the snow onto the road or have their contractor use the plough blade on the front of a pick-up to pull the snow out onto the road. It leaves lines of snow up to a foot high stretched across the very roads we have all paid taxes to get cleaned. Then these snow lines freeze solid and become similar to 7 or 8 inch high speed-bumps. It's a very selfish and un-neighborly practice. At the very least where there is a lawn that is where the snow should go.

Jim, if I remember correctly there is a state law that prohibits people from plowing their driveways out into state owned roads. It usually isn't a big problem until people do exactly what you say they do. I plow for myself, and frequently push out into and across the street. However, I ALWAYS, make sure I clean up the snow I push out, just a matter of professionalism.

Awesome job by the town crews. As someone who listens to the highway crews on my scanner, these people did their very best with what they have. Equipment break downs and cranky residents did not stop them. They just keep on going. Oh by the way, make their jobs easier by getting you vehicles off the roads. Also you need to remember, there were many wires down in town on the roads and the crews can't do much with the streets until the wires are taken care of.

They've really been working hard, it's not an easy job given that we had nearly two feet of snow. Good job NK Public Works!

I have to give them a C-. Route 1a south of Wickford was only navigable with a 4 wheel drive on Monday morning. I know that the schools were closed, but what about the rest of us who had to go to work?

They did a great job in my neighborhood and even pushed the snow back around my mail box which was buried in by a 3 foot deep snowbank. I have never seen them do that before, buit I was very thankful.

Excellent job by the plows. On two separate occasions, plow operators pushed the snow off the end of my driveway and onto the lawn after they had kind of buried me in. I have been critical of them in the past, but not during this storm. Well done

I was happy, they did our neighborhood to a driveable level (narrow but plowed) then widened it out later. It sucks when they come back and fill in the end of the driveway though but that obviously cant be helped.

They did a better job after it started melting. my street was plowed but it was like Post Road, all packed and full of ruts. Once the snow started to melt they came back and cleaned the street down to the pavement which made sense. My only gripe with the town plows and I am sure its true in every town, they could be a little kind to an older woman out there shoveling alone when it comes to plowing under her driveway. I would think they could turn their blade for two seconds. I was buried at the end of my driveway and knew I could never do it without dropping dead!! So a little courteousness in that regard isn't too much to ask I don't think.

I am glad to see they did Shermantown Rd again! That was some sketchy driving on Monday! My neighborhood is still only one lane driving, though. It was a little scary watching the bus try to navigate the street and the corners. I wish they would come through again.

My circle never got plowed...plow came through 3 times with the plow up and left......If you have a plow on your truck leave it down till all the snow is gone.

I was the neighbour that called the town 3 times because by Tuesday, I watched 3 trucks enter Colonial Rd and plowed 100ft of the Road and then lift their plow and turn to go back to Kingswood Rd. If it wasn't for Mr. Frank Bennett, my neighbours and I would still be stuck in our driveways. Jim Sullivan

Are you kidding me - if it wasn't for our kind neighbor and his plowing capabilities we would still be snowed in today. We did not see a plow or sander through the entire storm. NK was unprepared and under resourced. Once again here's a stiuation where the town of NK has a much higher opinion of itself and it's readiness to handle such situations than the facts would actually support. Sorry but this was a failed attempt at best which in my opinion would not justify the overtime.

Frankly , Frank, I don't know how the town priorities it's roads. Not that all town roads aren't important, but I would imagine, that a 300 ft.long road, with a 100 circle at the end of it, that there are 3 homes on. (important homes, mind you), would be at the top of the list. just saying

"Great" is a stretch. "Adequate" is more accurate. My neighbor spent a great deal of time creating a path to the closest road with his snowblower. Why? because we didn't see a plow til after 3 p.m. and only after several phone calls. When the plow did come, it completely blocked all the mailboxes on the street including those which people spent hours shoveling out. There has got to be a better way!

Once again , Morgan Ct. A small, quaint ,peaceful, rd., with little traffic. ( A good thing most of the time ).Not a thruway. You have to realize that it is the same 15 to 20 guys that had to handle 2 ft. of snow this time, not 2 inches or 12 inches but between 18 to 30 inches of snow. And did u notice the drifting , caused by the 60 mile an hour winds and at times snow at 2 inches of snow per hour. Also, u probably noticed a lot of large branches and trees down....those same 15 or 20 guys are jumping out of their trucks and cutting and removing those from the path or emergency vehicals, all DURING this blizzard. And lets not forget all the downed wires that had rds closed that further hampered plowing efforts. All and all,.... say what u want, I think they did one Hell of a job.... kudos

Trying to understand why Hatchery by pass, Lafayette, and Audobon were plowed and the 2 streets in the middle of all of them (Morgan and Bridal) were ignored until several hours later. True, they are not thruways as you put it, but we only needed to be connected to Hatchery (about100 yds)for the 11 families to be able to get out to somewhere with heat. Believe me I understand the huge amount of work involved and by no means would I compare it to N. Prov or Prov. but I still can not justify a grade higher than a "C".

If u really would like to know the ins and outs of how the town plowing runs, I could probably tell u more than most could and would love to answer any and all questions u could have. I mean that in an 100 percent friendly way, but I could never do it here on the computer.
