If you have walked through Wickford lately, or have been keeping up to date on Patch, you have probably noticed the town is preparing for the Festival of Lights. The celebration, which is coming up this weekend, is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Strolling down Brown Street at night amidst all the lights and carolers helps transform a picturesque New England village into a winter wonderland.

I would like to applaud the town's efforts in donating $7,000 toward the festival, easing the burden from small businesses in Wickford that normally split the costs. As someone who had spent years at the Festival of Lights selling Christmas wreaths to raise money for Boy Scout Troop 152, it is awesome to see that the festival will still go on this year.

The festival is not the only reason to head into Wickford this year. If you are looking for holiday gifts, avoid the long lines at Walmart and go for something more sentimental at one of the shops. I stopped in Gossip Boutique several weeks ago with absolutely no idea what to get a certain female member of my family. Even though I was no help to the staff there, they knew exactly what I should get. If you're looking for something for the person who cooks for you, stop by Kitchen & Table in Wickford. Need something for the kids? Check out Teddy Bearskins across the street. Jewelry for a lovely lady? Look no further then the Gold Lady Jewelers. Hungry after all the shopping? Grab a bite to eat and hot cup of coffee at Beach Rose Cafe.
