Construction On 427-Foot Turbine Halted

The revocation of North Kingstown Green's building permit has halted construction on NK's first turbine.

The Town of North Kingstown revoked the building permit for North Kingstown Green last week, ostensibly halting construction on a 427-foot wind turbine at one of the development's homes.

According to Town Manager Michael Embury, the permit was revoked after the town solicitor's office found that a required lot swap at the subdivision had not occurred and, therefore, the subdivision requirements were not completed. The oversight, according to Embury, was "enough to pull [the permit]" and stop construction on the turbine. Embury went on to say that the move was partially in response to residents who called for the building permit's revocation.

"It was a deed filing between the developer and the subdivision and we missed it," said David Darlington, spokesperson for Wind Energy Development LLC, which is installing the turbine. According to Darlington, Mark DePasquale – CEO of Wind Energy – is both the developer and head of the subdivision.

Darlington anticipates the matter will be resolved in the next few days.

Whether the revocation is a speed bump or brick wall in the process to erect the turbine remains to be seen, according to both Embury and Darlington. Embury stated there are some things that need to be looked at by the solicitor's office.

The 427-foot turbine is currently under construction in DePasquale's backyard. As of this date, only the base for the turbine has been dug out.

Thursday night the North Kingstown Planning Commission will hold another hearing on the application for a 389-foot turbine at Stamp Farm on South County Trail at 7 p.m. at the Beechwood Senior Center. ()
